WOAW presents an exhibition with work by Spanish artist Cristina BanBan (works and lives in New York). The exhibition curated by Case Studyo is launching from now to 21st May at WOAW, 5 Sun Street, Wan Chai. It is the first time of Cristina BanBan having her art exhibition in Hong Kong.
The exhibition explores the form of the human body, pushing the boundaries of the proportions of the subjects. Cristina investigates human action and motivation, as well as the blurred relationship between the real and the imagination. She inevitably formulates an answer to the social expectations, norms and values of society. Cristina transforms the figures using humour and a brave energy to create works that are filled with intimacy and directness.
Painting on large-scale colorful canvases filled with enlarged voluptuous feminine figures that remind us of 18th century neoclassical painting; BanBan is manipulating perspectives to draw attention to the monumentality of the figures, showing them in ‘spaces’ that seem too small to contain them. She challenges the notion of conventional figurative representation, offering her own take on figuration. Influenced by anime and expressionist aesthetics, her creatures seem mysteriously odd with their opulent and juicy looking bodies and their enormous hands and feet.
Covering the hottest new eats, the best places to play, offbeat takes on local culture, and so much more, Localiiz is every Hongkonger’s destination for how to live a well-rounded life in our vibrant city. Why the strange spelling? Well, Localiiz is designed to be your “local eyes”—and for that, you need two i’s.
