Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong is presenting the first solo exhibition of American abstractionist Jack Whitten, on view from now until 31 July 2021. Consisting of rarely seen paintings, sculpture and works on paper, the exhibition highlights a selection of Jack Whitten’s works from the 1960s through 2010s.
Jack Whitten (1939-2018), widely is celebrated for his innovative processes of applying and transfiguring paint in works equally alert to materiality, politics, and metaphysics. Whitten holds a unique place in the narrative of post-war American art: over the course of a six-decade career, he has constructed a bridge between gestural abstraction and process art, experimenting ceaselessly to arrive at a nuanced language of painting that hovers between mechanical automation and deeply personal expression. In 2016, Whitten was awarded by President Barack Obama a National Medal of Arts for “remaking the American canvas.” The New York Times has also labelled him “the father of new abstraction.”
