Opening at Rossi & Rossi Hong Kong on 21 May, “Growing Wings” features Leang Seckon’s latest body of work that condenses the dazzling changes in his home country into compositions interspersed with mythic Khmer folklore.
A pioneer in Cambodian contemporary art, Seckon produces works that are both narrative and autobiographical. His creative process allows him to record, understand and digest his past and the living present alongside the collective Khmer psyche.
Born during Cambodia’s civil war, Leang Seckon has lived through some of the most volatile and violent years in modern Cambodia, and his works frequently derive inspiration from the country’s tumultuous history. His haunting canvases recall historical events, and his immensely rich compositions expertly weave stories, at times gruesome and at times magical, from his personal history into fablelike vignettes.
Covering the hottest new eats, the best places to play, offbeat takes on local culture, and so much more, Localiiz is every Hongkonger’s destination for how to live a well-rounded life in our vibrant city. Why the strange spelling? Well, Localiiz is designed to be your “local eyes”—and for that, you need two i’s.
