Supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Hong Kong Museum of Art will be showcasing the “Fragrance of Time—In Search of Chinese Art of Scent” exhibition from 28 June to 16 October.
The use and appreciation of incense has a long-lasting history in China, closely intertwined with the aesthetics of ancient life and artistic creation. By delving deep into this profound and extensive line of history, the exhibition aims to present Chinese fragrance in all its splendour and diversity, emphasising its important role in shaping Chinese culture.
Curated by the expert teams of both the Hong Kong Museum of Arts and the Shanghai Museum, 160 sets of artefacts will be showcased to take the audience on an olfactory journey across thousands of years. This constellation of precious relics, spanning four sections, features ceramics, bamboo carvings, paintings, and bronze objects dating from the Neolithic period to the Qing dynasty. Each section explores different approaches to ancient China’s fragrance legacy with corresponding aromatic installations, allowing visitors to experience the sensory delights of scent appreciation as ancient forbears did.
In addition to the artwork pieces, visitors can take part in a series of special events and activities such as public lectures, fragrance workshops, and meditation sessions to engage with Chinese fragrance culture through various senses. Find out more here.
