At the ongoing Hong Kong Arts Festival, visitors will have the rare opportunity to see local legend Sun Ma Sze Tsang’s signature Cantonese operas performed on stage.
In a fitting tribute to the “King of Pen and Sword,” the spirit of the Cantonese opera singer and actor will be interpreted by Hong Kong’s brightest emerging talents in four well-known operas: The Golden Bracelet, The Sword of Loyalty, The Romantic Emperor, and Emperor Guangxu Paying Homage to Concubine Zhen at Night.
The four operas are chosen for their showcase of Sun Ma Sze Tsang’s versatile mastery as a Cantonese opera singer and artist, and the master himself often took up roles ranging from paupers to emperors in a testament to his acting range. From full-length performances to comedy, romance, and tragedy, there’s bound to be something for every Cantonese opera lover at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. All operas are performed in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles.
