Under the theme “Arts & Action,” the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2024 is an ensemble of cultural events taking place across the city to celebrate the city’s creative talents. Across a wide range of genres, Hong Kong artists have made their mark.
For one, the martial arts genre holds a special place in this year’s edition as Hong Kong commemorates the one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Chinese wuxia novels giant Jin Yong—learn more about the dedicated exhibitions here. Furthermore, the importance of martial arts in Hong Kong cinema is highlighted through the “Of Fists and Swords–Kaleidoscope of Hong Kong Martial Arts Films” screenings. Also remembered in 2024 is the passing of musician and lyricist James Wong, commemorated through the exhibition “A Laugh at the World–James Wong” on show at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
Live performances are at the heart of the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival. From 12 to 14 July, the public can see the Chinese Kungfu x Dance Carnival for free. On 21 and 22 July, the Art!On Pop concert at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre will reimagine Jin Yong’s novels into a one-of-a-kind concert, featuring famous theme songs composed by James Wong and James Koo.
