What’s in a name? Quite a lot, if those names are Romeo and Juliet. Co-presented with the French May Arts Festival, Opera Hong Kong will present a French production of Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod with two evening performances on 10 and 11 May respectively, and one afternoon show on 12 May.
Shown to the public for the first time in 1867, this opera was a pioneer of its genre in Western opera—“drame lyrique.” Directed by Arnaud Bernard and produced by Warren Mok, Gounod’s version of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy was performed by Opera Hong Kong for the first time in 2016 and is now returning by popular demand.
French actors will lead the five opera acts, supported by Opera Hong Kong’s chorus and orchestra under the baton of Roberto Gianola. Although it is performed in French, there will also be Chinese and English subtitles. Buy tickets here.
