7 Easy Grooming Habits For Any Man

By Contributed content 3 May 2019
Gone are the days where men who spent too long in a bathroom fixing themselves up were met with scorn. With men’s grooming routines becoming more, well, routine, there’s been a rush of products, treatments, and salons, each customised for men. But if you're a newbie to the whole personal grooming thing and don't know where to start, don't worry, we've got you. Here are a few easy, simple, and straightforward grooming tips from guest blogger Angie Grey that any man can incorporate into their lives.

1. Become a Regular at Your Barbers

If you're not a very organised type of person, then you probably don’t go for a haircut until you look like Tarzan. If you want your hair to be short, then get it done every three to four weeks. For medium-length hair, you must get it done every four to six weeks. Of course, it all depends on your hair growth. If it’s easier, mark the dates on the calendar so you know when to visit the salon next. Don't be afraid to get creative and consult your barber to find a haircut that suits your face, personality, and everyday life.

2. Cut Your Nails

Some people are guilty of biting their nails. Guys, it’s time to stop that. Get yourself a nice pair of nail clippers and give your nails a cut at least once every week. If your nails grow faster than that, you can cut them more often. Cutting your nails will keep dirt from collecting under them, and will give them a nicer look.

3. Scrub Up

Depending on your skin type, you may have to wash your face more often than you thought. You definitely have to wash your face with a quality face wash first thing in the morning. But you need to get another rinse after you come back home from work or school. You won’t believe how polluted outdoor air can be, especially in Hong Kong. Before you go to bed, scrub your face with a facial scrub and then moisturise afterwards.

4. Shower the Right Way

It might sound strange, but there is a right way to take a shower. The temperature has to be just right: not too cold, and not too hot. Hot water is good for your skin, but be careful not to burn yourself. Massage your scalp with the palms of your hands for good blood circulation. Apply shampoo on your hair every two days, so you won't deprive your scalp of natural oil. Always rinse your hair with a conditioner after washing off the shampoo. Scrub your body with a body sponge once a week to get rid of dead skin cells. Rub a good body wash on your body the rest of the time.

5. Wear Deodorant and Aftershave

Yes, your shampoo and body wash may smell really good, but they won’t last all day long. You have to apply deodorant under your armpit before you set foot outside. After you apply deodorant, go ahead and spray some aftershave on your body. Invest in one or two classic scents you really like. Woody scents typically suit winter, while lighter, citrusy scents work best in warmer seasons.

6. Groom Your Brows and Beard

Some men have perfect eyebrows – all they require is just a little tweezing here and there, and they look like models. Maintaining a beard, however, is more challenging. If you have a certain style of beard, then you have to make sure that you trim it often for perfection. If your beard doesn't match your hair colour it could look rather odd, so if you have dyed hair, make sure you dye your beard as well to keep it looking top-notch at all times. If grooming at home isn't possible, then the local salon is always there to help you.

7. Trim Your Ear and Nose Hair

Being a man, you naturally grow a lot of hair in your ears and nose. You do need some hair in those regions to protect your ears and nose from allergens and dust, so just trim it once a week. Use trimming scissors, a mirror, and good lighting to get the job done. With time, you will be able to master the art of nose and ear hair trimming. You can also invest in a good nose hair trimmer that will do the work for you. All you have to do is insert it into your nose or ears, turn the switch on and voilà! Just be careful not to hurt yourself. In a nutshell, grooming doesn’t have to be difficult. Organise your grooming schedule throughout the week until it becomes second nature to you. If you have some cash to spare, a trip to the salon once a week can help you get all your grooming done in a few hours. But if you want to save up and do things at home, this article is your easy guide.
