7 Simple Ways to Improve Your Mental Wellbeing

By Contributed content 10 April 2019
Life in Hong Kong can be stressful to say the least, with busy work schedules and social lives pulling us in every direction. With this in mind, making sure that we take measures to look after our physical and mental health is paramount, and nobody knows this better than wellness blogger Liyana Perry, who shares some simple tips.

1. Value Yourself

First off, a bit of self love is always a good thing. If you don't value yourself, then it can be hard in life to maintain good physical and mental health. So instead of fixating on where you might not be meeting your own set standards, try and look at where you do. You can always improve on your weaknesses, but doing so is much easier when you can appreciate the strengths you have too.

2. Surround Yourself with Good People

The people that we work with, talk with, and think with are very important to our self development. If you want to be the best person that you can, then surrounding yourself with people who are ambitious yet empathetic is always a good idea. If you do this, you are much more likely to get through life seeing positive improvements and changes, which will in turn have a long-term impact on you. On the flip side, if you are surrounded by people who are not good for you, then you will cease to progress. Those who are good for us challenge us, help us to improve, and when we need it most, listen to us.

3. Go Off the Grid

Getting yourself to regularly go offline and out of social excess for a short period of time, even if it's only a few days, can be very healthy. Try not to get taken in by social media and online entertainment too much, and give yourself some time away from everything. When we are online, we can learn about so much, but we can also become preoccupied with the needless, therefore having a break from technology can help you avoid the desire to do that.

4. Quiet Your Mind

Working to quieten your mind can help you take a more pragmatic approach to the day. Try putting on some quiet, slow-paced instrumental music, and leave it on in the background, while you concentrate on your breathing. If you do this for a short period of time, your mind is likely to just quieten down, and this can help you avoid over-thinking things or creating needless problems for yourself. You can also try taking a meditation class in Hong Kong.

5. Set Realistic Goals

Don’t allow your goals to become out of focus with reality. Yes, we all want a life of luxury and excess, but that is not always possible. Instead, set your goals relative to where you are today. Let’s say you want to own a company with 100 employees, but don’t even have a company yet. Start off by trying to set up that company and then getting that first employee beside yourself. Realistic goals create realistic results, which is good for long-term mental balance.

6. Massage to Improve Concentration

Research suggests that a quick massage – even to just the temples or jawline – can feel good, relieve tension, and help you concentrate on the matter at hand. If you feel stressed or uncomfortable enough to let it break your concentration, then consider getting a massage at a spa, or taking some time out to relax and take a deep breath.

7. Enjoy 15 Minutes of Sunshine

Lastly, try and get outside for at least 15 minutes of sunshine per day. You could do this after work, at lunch, before you go to work, or at any time that you wish. Having just 15 minutes of sunshine per day is sure to bring lasting results – including far greater personal satisfaction. A bit of time spent just taking in nature can be quite liberating, and often leads to a healthier, happier mind.
