Beach Cleanup Crew Wanted at Sham Tseng this Sunday

By Amanda Sheppard 18 September 2018
September 16 marked World Cleanup Day, and to mark the occasion, Waste Free Hong Kong, HelperChoice and HK Hiking Meetup had organised a clean up to tackle the waste at Sham Tseng. Unfortunately, Super Typhoon Mangkhut had other plans.

Pictures of waste strewn across the city are hardly breaking news, but the sheer volume of plastic that was washed on the city's shores after the largest storm on record hit Hong Kong on Sunday has put the spotlight firmly back on the plastic pandemic – with polystyrene containers posing a real threat to marine life. Local NGO Greenearth estimates that Hongkongers go through a staggering 900 million bottles of water annually. This Sunday, the team at Waste Free Hong Kong are re-grouping and taking to the shores with a mission in mind. The cleanup has the aim to raise awareness, rally support and work towards lobbying for government reform. Waste collected on the day will be tallied and logged, resulting in tangible proof to bring to the table in the war on waste. Event Details When: 9am on Sunday, September 23 Where: Meet at the bus stop at Sea Crest Villa, Phase 4, 18 Castle Peak Road, Tsing Lung Tau How to get there: 962 CityBus from Central, or the 234B KMB bus from Tsuen Wan West Station Bus Terminal Visit the Facebook event for more details.
