If your December schedule is looking like it needs melodic upliftment, consider a trip with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) to appreciate the dulcet comfort of harmony and balance during their five different outstanding concerts.
HK Phil presents an array of international-star musicians this December! The first programme in this line-up of concerts features the brilliant Dutch Maestro Jaap van Zweden and German classical cellist Jan Vogler. The swayful Peter Grimes: Four Sea Interludes by Benjamin Britten, seasonally poetic Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar, and powerful Symphony No. 9 by Dmitri Shostakovich will be played during its runtime of one hour and 45 minutes.

In continuation of Dmitri Shostakovich’s work, his most popular fifth symphony will be conducted by Maestro Jaap van Zweden in the following week. Additionally, Akiko Suwani, a Japanese all-star violinist, will tackle Sergei Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto to display the genius of the composer, alongside the world premiere of local composer Simon Yip Sai-man’s new work.

If heavily sentimental pieces and moving orchestral harmonies are more your pace, rising star pianist Niu Niu’s take on Tchaikovsky’s famous First Piano Concerto might be perfect for you. The concert begins with the deeply passionate Sixth Symphony, “Pathétique,” and Jaap van Zweden continues leading these two best-loved masterpieces by Tchaikovsky in this concert, which runs for one hour and 45 minutes.

In a slight twist of events, conductor Lio Kukoman, newly recognised as Asia’s Most Influential HK 2022, will conduct this East-meets-West thematic world premiere programme. An innovative collaboration based on the classic household name Cantonese opera Floral Princess by Tong Tik-sang will be a multimedia project piece accompanied by on-screen footage taken from the original legendary act.

We ring in 2023 with a traditional Viennese New Year’s concert, which will include a lively programme of exhilarating dance music from a myriad of renowned composers such as Johann Strauss II, Kreisler, and Richard Strauss. World-leading conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada will be conducting the concert, which will also feature overtures by Berlioz and Tchaikovsky.
