About Madama Butterfly
An Asian heroine from Japan, Madama Butterfly, shows her total commitment to an American lieutenant, Pinkerton. During the wedding, drama arises as her uncle and her family turn against Butterfly. Against all odds, the newly wedded couple take us to the end of the first act with the Vogliatemi bene, one of the greatest love duets in operas. Pinkerton calms Butterfly's quivering heart with a vow of his love… Three years has passed. When Madama Butterfly's son and servant fall asleep, the melancholic and calm humming chorus (Coro a bocca chiusa) accompanies Butterfly to stay up all night, waiting for Pinkerton's return.
