Dominique Ansel of Cronut fame opens new bakery in Hong Kong

By Jen Paolini 7 January 2020

Chef Dominique Ansel of Cronut fame has landed in Hong Kong and his new bakery Dang Wen Li by Dominique Ansel opens at noon today!

As part of the celebrated patissier’s tribute to Hong Kong, he has prepared a collection of innovative desserts, inspired by local flavours and exclusive to the Harbour City shop. Expect creations like the Lemon Juice Box ($62), an Earl Grey bergamot cake to invoke nostalgic childhood memories of the classic Vita Lemon Tea, and the Macaroni ($58), a lemon and ricotta cheesecake shaped like elbow macaroni, complete with hand-cut white chocolate “ham” and crispy “peas” to round up the meal. Familiar sights like the Soup Dumpling ($62) and Pineapple Bun ($65) have also been reinvented into modern delights.

Made-to-order specialities like Red Bean Ice Cream Mochi Fishballs ($68) and Egg Roll Egg Tart ($38) are also on the menu, and Hong Kong diners will finally get to try the best-selling DKA ($38), Chef Ansel’s take on the classic Breton pastry. The Hong Kong shop also introduces its very own version of the popular Cookie Shot ($48), shaped like a Yakult bottle and served with milk tea.

Dang Wen Li opens at noon in Harbour City today. Aside from desserts and cakes, the shop will also serve a menu of savouries, which includes dishes like Turnip Cake Muffin with Soft Scrambled Eggs ($78), Omelette Soufflé ($88), and Silk Egg Katsu Sando ($88). Chef Ansel’s range of traditional French pastries will also line the shopfront counters, led by his world-famous Croissants ($28) with perfect honeycomb structures, Mochi Peanut Chausson ($38), and much more.
