Hong Kong’s foil-fencing wunderkind has struck gold again! Edgar Cheung Ka-long has won the gold medal in the individual men’s foil final on 29 July, giving Hong Kong its second gold medal and third medal overall at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Cheung defended the title he won at the last Olympics in Tokyo, hitting a few setbacks in the competition but ultimately coming out victorious in the 15–14 final against Italian foil fencer Filippo Macchi. It was a tight bout, with both finalists evening the score time and again, and the fencing machine showing that both had scored the final point. Subsequent video reviews confirmed Cheung’s win, securing him the second gold medal in fencing this year, one day after Vivian Kong Man-wai achieved gold in women’s individual épée.
Hong Kong was especially excited about this win, with this epic match reminding them of the record-breaking performance Cheung delivered at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Additionally, this is a new record for Cheung, who has become the first Hong Kong athlete to win two Olympic gold medals, and the first athlete to win back-to-back gold in men’s individual foil since Christian d’Oriola at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.
