How would you like to fish for your own food, choose how you eat it,
and have it freshly prepared by expert Japanese chefs? Well now you can, because Japan’s most famous fishing restaurant –
Chougiyo Funaya (HK) – has officially landed in Hong Kong. We take a dive into the quirky venue that's reeling in curious Hongkongers.

The Venue
Spanning 7,000 square feet in the COS Centre in Kwun Tong, Chougiyo Funaya (HK) Japanese fishing restaurant invites customers to fish for their live food, while sitting in a giant wooden canoe in the middle of the venue. The canoe can seat roughly 15 to 20 people, so if you’re calling ahead to make a booking, be sure to specify that you would like to be seated there, and bear in mind that children under the age of 12 will not be allowed aboard. The restaurant also offers open seating, as well as private Tatami rooms that are perfect for small gatherings with friends. There is also a fish specialist on hand to check the water quality of the pools everyday to ensure they are always kept in optimum living condition for the fish.
Gone Fishing
To start their dining experience, customers need to pay $20 which gets them a small portion of fish bait (Antarctic krill) and 45 minutes of fishing time. If they need more time, however, they can purchase a second portion for another 45 minutes. There are two fish pools inside the restaurant, both holding roughly 100 to 200 fish – so it shouldn't be too hard to find a catch. There are six different types of fish in both pools, and each one costs between $300 to $400. Once diners have caught their grand trophy, they can inform a member of staff who will then give them some options on how they want their fish to be cooked. These usually include grilled, sashimi-sliced, sauté, shabu-shabu/hotpot, and deep fried.
The Food
In addition to the cost of the fish, extra charges will be added to your meal, depending on the cooking method you have chosen. But if fishing is not really your bag, the restaurant offers a range of mouth-watering items on the menu, such as meat and seafood skewers, wagyu beef steak, slow-cooked Japanese snow crab, and more, which are all freshly made to order. To celebrate its opening in Hong Kong, the restaurant is also offering a special grand opening promotion. From now until February 15, the first 10 tables of 4 people or more, who book during the night shift, will get to enjoy fresh Kyushu Uni for only $20, which is originally priced at $380.
While we're not totally hooked on the idea of fishing for our own dinner, we're certainly curious to see if this new restaurant concept catches on.
