12 best places for bed linen and mattresses in Hong Kong

By Jen Paolini 16 April 2020

Not all mattresses are made the same, and not all sleepers will get the best quality snooze on the same bed linens. While popping into the nearest IKEA might be your first instinct when it comes to purchasing bedding and bedroom basics (no judgment here), let us not discount the many other bed linen and mattress retailers in Hong Kong, from smaller, homegrown brands to boutique luxury options. Whether you are new to the city and need to stock up on basic bedroom essentials or looking to replace and upgrade your sheets, here are our top picks for the best places to shop for bed linen and mattresses.

Muji

For a quick and affordable solution, you can always rely on Japanese favourite Muji. This home furnishing, lifestyle, and garment giant covers your bedding basics, from pillows, pillowcases, duvets, blankets, and cushion covers to bed linen and sheets.

As per usual Muji aesthetic, all colours available are in the realm of neutral shades, while fabrics and materials include satin, jersey cotton, flannel, woven linen, and double-gauze cotton. There’s also a duvet storage bag made from leftover cotton during weaving processes on offer, so you have a convenient way to put away your winter bedding.

Muji even carries a line of lightweight, washable mattresses, a product made of polyethylene with a well-structured mesh design, replete with a cotton cover that is removable and machine-washable as well. While not of the same spring-mechanism that many traditional mattresses boast, this design was created in response to customers’ needs for better sweat absorption at night and improved access for changing sheets. Since all components are washable, you can easily keep your mattress and cover clean and hygienic.

Due to the current coronavirus situation, Muji is operating at reduced hours, but are open nonetheless.

Heveya®

Heveya®, located in Ap Lei Chau, specialises in bedding products made of natural and sustainable materials. Their Heveya mattresses are made of 100 percent natural organic latex, without any glue or metal springs inside—no toxic off-gassing and electromagnetic radiation issues here!

Due to its natural elasticity, latex conforms to your body shape, promoting good spinal alignment and distributing body pressure for better blood circulation during sleep time. The latex core is also ideal for sleepers prone to allergies, as it is breathable and naturally dust mite- and mould-resistant.

Encased in a removable cover of bamboo fibre filled with organic cotton padding, the Heveya mattress can easily be cleaned to ensure a hygienic sleeping environment. Naturally, their bedsheet options come in bamboo fibre options, while their latex pillows come in multiple different shapes and sizes.

In light of the current situation, Heveya encourages customers to make an appointment via their website for showroom viewings and private consultation with their sleep experts.

Ikea

As the first destination that comes to mind for many seeking home furnishings and wares, Ikea should need no introduction. When it comes to mattresses and accessories, Ikea offers both spring and foam mattresses, with optional mattress pads and protectors and various levels of firmness for you to choose from. Bamboa Home

You might be surprised to know that bamboo fibre is considered one of the softest fabrics in the world, especially when we think of wild bamboo as a sturdy material, rigid enough for Hong Kong’s scaffolding workers to scramble up and down.

Aside from being naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial, bamboo bed sheets boast higher durability than traditional bed linen and also have allergy-reducing abilities. It is also unabsorbent, meaning that bamboo bedding does not soak up the oils from your skin as you sleep on it.

Sold on bamboo yet? Bamboa Home, a boutique shop located in PMQ, is your go-to for all things bamboo, and they stock a selection of buttery-soft sheet sets in eight different colours and prints.

Franc Franc

The origin of this sophisticated home décor shop can be traced back to Japan, but over the years, Franc Franc has become a household name for chic and beautiful household items in Hong Kong. We’ll admit, we often wander through the showrooms and wistfully sigh at the fashionable interiors we dream of emulating within our own flats (only to be disappointed by the cruel reminder that we live in glorified shoeboxes).

Nevertheless, small spaces must not prevent us from injecting a sense of style into our home, and the bed linen options at Franc Franc—always on a seasonal rotation ranging from solid colours to floral patterns and bold prints—give us the tools to do just that. If chinoiserie prints, geometric designs, and embroidered sheet sets are on the top of your must-have list, this is the place to go.

As a bonus, most sheet sets go for a reasonable price tag and they also carry bed linen made from Tencel (a fibre made from cellulose found in the wood pulp of trees), bamboo fibres, and soft-spun cotton in a large variety of thread counts.

In addition to fine bed linen, blankets, and pillowcases—which come at an appropriate price tag, but hey, that’s what you’ll have to pay for premium quality—Yves Delorme also offers accessories for the bathroom and bedroom, including sumptuous throw pillows and plush bathrobes. While the price point is on the higher end compared to other options on this list, there’s satisfaction in knowing that your comfort levels can be counted by the superior thread count.

But you’re here for linen and bedding, aren’t you? Omós has that too—in eco-conscious form, following their company’s philosophy. Though their curated selection is on the smaller side, they specialise in stocking linen fabrics in a variety of colours.
