Localiiz Property Picks: Inside the Eaton HK Hotel

By Amanda Sheppard 27 November 2018
Hotel openings in Hong Kong are hardly a rare event, but the newly opened Eaton HK aimed to set itself apart from the get-go. Rather than a run-of-the-mill hotel opening, it celebrated its opening with a Human / Progress Festival – a two-day event with curated activities ranging from film screenings to live music performances to cooking demonstrations, led by Hong Kong’s leading innovators, activists, and entrepreneurs. The Hong Kong hotel marks the second Eaton hotel – the first of which, in Washington DC, was dubbed the ‘anti-Trump’ hotel by the media. So just what lies inside Hong Kong’s newest progressive property? We step inside, to give you a sneak peek.

The Vision

Eaton is the brainchild of Katherine Lo – the daughter of Lo Ka-shui, the owner of Great Eagle Holdings, which counts The Langham Hotels among its portfolio of investments. Part hotel, part co-working space and creative community platform, Eaton professes itself to be “an interdisciplinary hotel experience to travellers seeking inspiration, innovation, and impact”. Beyond the conventional hotel offerings, it curates social content and programmes ranging from wellness seminars, arts events, and more to offer visiting and resident creatives a safe space to create and collaborate.

The Location

Located in the heart of Kowloon, Eaton is within walking distance of prime tourist locales the Temple Street Night Market and Jade Street. It also offers complimentary walking tours through both sites to its guests, helping them navigate two of Hong Kong’s most hectic hotspots. Despite its central location, it still manages to create the atmosphere of an urban oasis, with its bar and terrace overlooking Jordan, and a rooftop pool and wellness centre helping guests escape the frenzy below.

The Rooms

Guests can choose between signature Eaton Rooms and The Artists’ Studio – a fully-functioning recording studio with a separate bedroom and living space. Rooms at Eaton reflect the broader concept, sourcing high-quality, hand-crafted furnishings and amenities from artisan producers. Rooms boast walk-in tiled showers and are equipped with hardwood desks, 43-inch smart televisions, and healing Himalayan salt lamps. All-natural bath products are exclusively sourced from Grown Alchemists.

The Co-working Space

Eaton House is a global co-working space and community platform that looks to connect activists, creators, and entrepreneurs. Membership is available, and you can opt to rent a hot desk or private offices that cater to between two and six people. Membership benefits include access to a 50-person screening room and theatre, Eaton HK's private arts space and dance studio, preferential pricing at Eaton Hotel’s food and beverage outlets (as well as guest room rates), and the option to share your thoughts on a dedicated radio station, aired to members as well as the general public.

The Food

When it comes to food, guests and visitors have their pick of Michelin-meals to a contemporary twist on the cha chaan teng. The Foodhall plays host to classic Cantonese dishes and popular Asian fare in an informal, diner setting inspired by the films of director Wong Kar-wai, while The Astor brings the charm of old-school cha chaan tengs to a mixture of local and regional delicacies. In the building’s basement, Yat Tung Heen is a Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant led by Chef Tam Tung, who serves contemporary cuisine housed in a room inspired by 1920s Shanghai.

The Drink

With a name like Terrible Baby, this bar and terrace is guaranteed to stick in your head. The spacious outdoor seating area offers itself as the perfect space to unwind, with regular live music scheduled, as well as wellness events. Next to the Astor and facing the building’s exterior, the Flower Years bar offers an extensive range of craft beers from around the region, as well as hand-crafted artisan cocktails.
