Given the myriad kindergartens and nurseries in Hong Kong, picking a school for your kid’s early childhood education can be a bit of a minefield. If you’re seeking an up-close and personal experience to make the best decision for kindergarten enrolment in Hong Kong, here’s a piece of good news. Mighty Oaks International Nursery & Kindergarten in Kennedy Town is hosting a Green Charity Fair this month and offering a discount on trial playgroup classes, so you can fully understand what lies ahead for your little ones. Here’s everything you need to know about the event.
Mighty Oaks places great emphasis on character development, which forms a solid foundation for children to grown and thrive. Nine virtues—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—are incorporated in their curriculum, and child-focused learning practices are used across all academic areas. Students are also encouraged to explore, investigate, and take pleasure in their successes within a nurturing educational environment. Through this system—“where lifelong learning meets character development”—students blossom from little acorns into mighty oaks.
Based on two of the world’s best early-years curricula—the United Kingdom’s Early Years Foundation Stages Curriculum (EYFS) and the Canadian Full-Day Early Learning–Kindergarten Program Curriculum—the child-centred approach at Mighty Oaks cultivates healthy self-identity through play and discovery, so students form positive relationships with people around them and the community at large. In addition, the PATHS program, the gold standard of social and emotional learning (SEL), is implemented to promote emotional and social competency. Students acquire knowledge and skills through these key components, learning to manage their emotions and enhance social awareness, on top of developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills during daily activities.
As a school with bilingual and trilingual streams, Mighty Oaks aims to provide students with a solid foundation in English and Chinese (both Cantonese and Putonghua). Two teachers, one specialising in English and the other in Chinese, take charge of each class simultaneously. Class activities are designed together to cover subject areas including language, maths, science, music, physical education, and more—all based around a monthly theme. Class sizes are purposely kept small with a maximum of 16 students per class. This low teacher-student ratio allows them to build close relationships and offer attention to individual needs. Teachers are also able to monitor each student’s progress and identify the way of learning best suited to them.
Mighty Oaks is currently the only private kindergarten in Hong Kong offering scholarships to students from playgroup classes (with students aged eight months old). Two scholarships are allocated every school year for students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.
Held on November 23 (Saturday), 10.30am–4pm, the Mighty Oaks Green Charity Fair is a free family-friendly event, offering eco-friendly food and gifts from local green vendors. There will also be many exciting workshops for both you and your little ones to participate in. For every dollar you spend at the fair, Mighty Oaks will match it dollar-for-dollar and make a donation to J Life Foundation!Parents and young ones can take full advantage of the occasion as well: Mighty Oaks is offering a discount on first two trial playgroup classes for $250 (originally priced at $780). This is a rare opportunity to support local businesses, and also see if Mighty Oaks is the right place for your child!
