Hiking in Hong Kong’s steamy summer is not for the fainthearted. With temperatures often soaring above 30 degrees Celsius, and humidity levels reaching 80 percent on average, walking outdoors feels like you’re plunging into a simmering cauldron, quite unlike the arid trails of drier countries. Conditions like these call for smart gear choices to keep you comfortable while you enjoy the stunning landscapes of the city. Here’s what you need to wear and pack to tackle Hong Kong’s trails with confidence.
Opt for garments made from moisture-wicking fabrics to help manage the copious sweat your body will produce in the humid heat. These fabrics are designed to pull moisture away from your skin, making it easier for sweat to evaporate and cool you down. Look out for polyester or nylon apparel.
Lightweight and breathable, these are a must for lower-body comfort. Quick-dry shorts or skorts have the ability to dry off fast even in high humidity, reducing discomfort from sweating to allow you to enjoy your hike without the dampness.
If you’re venturing into areas with thick underbrush or want protection from the sun and insects, full-coverage athletic leggings crafted from breathable, quick-drying material are your best bet.
Invest in a pair of socks specifically designed to cool your feet or, at the very least, wick away moisture. Your feet will thank you, especially during longer hikes.
A cooling towel can be a lifeline during a hike. Simply soak it in water, wring it out, and drape it around your neck or over your head for instant relief from the heat. Pro tip: spray a cooling mist onto it for increased effect.
Staying hydrated is crucial, and a hydration pack can carry more water than traditional bottles, with the added convenience of easy access through a sip tube.
Although the temptation to wear open-toe shoes can be strong in summer, protect your feet from rough terrain with a good pair of covered-toe hiking boots. Opt for lightweight and breathable designs to keep your feet comfortable.
A cap with a brim can shield your face from the relentless sun and help you avoid sunburn and heatstroke.
Don’t laugh—this can be a game-changer. It offers portable shade and is a boon on exposed trails with little to no cover.
Bug repellent spray is essential. Humidity brings out hordes of spiders and insects, including mosquitoes and ticks. Applying a good-quality bug repellent will save you from bug bites, and the discomfort that ensues.
When the humidity is up and the trails are calling, a dry bag with spare clothes and a towel can be your best friend, especially when you can’t wait to get out of your sweat-soaked clothes post-hike. Also, remember to change your socks! Dry feet are happy feet, and changing into a fresh pair can boost your comfort significantly during the hike.
So, there you have it—gear up correctly, and there’s no reason why the high humidity should stop you from exploring the breathtaking landscapes that Hong Kong’s trails have to offer. Happy hiking!
