Hong Kong is bursting with coffee shops, and new openings are appearing left and right. Holding its own against neighbouring rivals South Korea and Japan when it comes to coffee and cafés, our city definitely has its own eclectic roster to boast about. After all, who doesn’t need their daily dose of caffeine or thirst-quenching drink to start the day? Join us as we round up the latest cafés and coffee shops popping up in the city.
Hypebeans has opened its first standalone café! Inspired by the newsstands of New York City, the new concept occupies an intimate space that brings together residents, workers, and coffee lovers of the neighbourhood. Hypebeans Café offers all your usual coffee orders alongside a regional menu inspired by cha chaan teng drinks, highlighting Hong Kong diner staples in creations such as the Ovaltine espresso and YuenYeung. Tea lovers will also enjoy the rich and aromatic hojicha latte, as well as matcha lattes with or without a coffee base. All beverages are designed to pair perfectly with the matcha with hojicha chocolate glaze and mochi madeleine.

Hailing from Kyoto, the Japanese speciality café has opened its doors in Hong Kong! “Kurasu” means “to live” or “lifestyle,” embodying the unique coffee culture of Kyoto which the brand hopes to share with the world. Specialising in crafting drinks using coffee beans from the city, Kurasu offers house-blend coffee as well as matcha-based drinks, such as the matcha latte espresso and matcha latte. Pair your drinks with cheesecake, pudding, and freshly-baked custard puffs.

Newly opened at Quarryside is Islet Coffee Lab, a coffee stand subtly tucked away in a corner of the harbourfront community space. Islet is well-equipped to handle your usual coffee orders, speciality drinks such as the citrusy signature Amber, as well as a series of snacks. Although primarily offering takeaway coffee, patrons can also enjoy their brews in the outdoor seating area.

Something Somewhere Gallery is a cosy and pet-friendly hybrid café located in Sheung Wan’s Po Hing Fong. Part café and part gallery, visitors will find a series of artworks as well as pottery on display alongside plants and wooden furniture. Currently, the café offers coffee and homemade cakes, with the red velvet cake and cheesecake being popular options. Something Somewhere Gallery is open from Friday to Sunday during its soft-opening period.

Popular sourdough bakery Cuít has opened a café in Sai Kung! Patrons can expect a wide variety of freshly baked goods, such as canelés, brioche French toast, cookies, cakes, scones, and, of course, sourdough with homemade preserves. As for drinks, Cuít offers coffee, tea, as well as speciality drinks such as the Peanut Sandy, a unique blend of long black coffee topped with peanut foam.

Calling all pet parents—a new pet-grooming café has opened in Tai Hang! Bogu offers a wide range of grooming services suitable for dogs and cats, as well as pet- and human-friendly food and drinks for before or after the pampering session. For mains, highlights include the chicken fillet gochujang rigatoni and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs open-faced sandwich. For sweets, the Shiba Inu macrons are must-tries and come in locally-inspired flavours such as black sesame tongyuen and peanut butter waffle. As for drinks, Bogu offers coffee, tea, and speciality drinks.

Located at the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier is Sea You Lounge, a vibrant café that turns into a bar when the sun sets. Seafarers and land-dwelling patrons are treated to a wide selection of food, such as soup udon with pork cutlet and yakitori. For drinks, Sea You Lounge offers tea, coffee, and speciality drinks such as hojicha latte and passion fruit turmeric green tea kombucha. A selection of craft beers and cocktails are also available in the evening.

Cheek to Cheek is a newly opened café in Soho, with elegant interiors that evoke a cosy and intimate environment for patrons to enjoy its food and drinks. The décor is reminiscent of jazz lounges, with occasional live jazz performances adding to the ambience. Highlights of the food menu include sourdough sandwiches and pasta, while its desserts pair perfectly with a cup of coffee.

Newly opened in Wong Chuk Hang is Single Origin by ACT, a café offering single-origin coffee sourced from regions across Africa. The café occupies an intimate space decorated with cultural artefacts and vibrant artworks, offering patrons a comfortable place to wind down with a cup of coffee and some delicious food. Single Origin offers a selection of pastries, pasta, soup, and wraps.
