From historical fiction and dystopian futures to psychological thrillers, here’s a list of what we’re watching on Netflix Hong Kong this May 2023.
Fans of Bridgerton will be thrilled with this new release that stars India Amarteifio as Queen Charlotte, the matriarch ruling the fictional England of the same-named popular series. Follow Charlotte’s journey in coming to terms with the burden of the throne, which was thrusted upon her shoulders when she was betrothed against her will to King George III. Witty, emotional, and intimate, this spin-off shows how young Charlotte managed to inflict the monumental societal change reflected in the main series.
Deliverymen have become key to life in Korea, and it’s no surprise that this dependence has sparked many drama series written around and about the popular profession—think Strongest Deliveryman, for one. Black Knight, however, takes this to another level. Set in a dystopian future, humanity’s survival is dependent on deliverymen who ship supplies, gas masks, and other essentials to those in need in a world where the air is no longer safe to breathe. Kim Woo-bin makes a long-awaited comeback in this series. Available 12 May
Life is unpredictable, and most of the time, you meet the right person at the strangest of times and places, as the protagonists of this movie have found. On his way to a funeral and a wedding on the same day, a young man finds himself in a chance encounter with a young woman, leading him onto a journey of self-discovery that ponders on the meanings of life and death in this hit Indonesian film. A young boy convicted for murdering his parents has not said a single word to anyone since he committed the crime. After being imprisoned for six years, he was released on good behaviour and sent home, not knowing that a team of psychiatrists determined to study and monitor his behaviour has set up cameras in his house. Expect mind games, manipulation, and even love. Available 19 May
Based on the true story of the Frattasio brothers, Mixed by Erry documents how the three managed to build an empire by trading mixed cassette tapes in Naples for distribution that soon took the city by storm in the 1980s and 1990s, right before piracy was made illegal. Heartwarming at times, this film is a blast to the past for many who still hold onto one of many tapes mixed by Erry. Available 31 May
The popular webtoon-turned-K-drama is finally coming to Netflix Hong Kong! In this series inspired by real crimes committed in Korea, a military academy graduate works as a taxi driver for a company that helps victims and their families take revenge on those who have gotten away with their heinous deeds. Starring Le Je-hoon, this gritty yet witty series speaks to one of the most pressing issues plaguing Korean society to this day. Available 29 May
Produced by the creators of Queer Eye, this mini-series documents the world of underwater performers, who have turned their love for marine creatures into careers. From small-town shows in Florida to crowning Kings and Queens of the Seas in the Bahamas, this unique series demonstrates the perseverance and adaptability of one’s passion. Available 23 May
