New On The Menu: Sweet Treats and Savoury Bites to Enjoy this Month

By Sophie Pettit 27 June 2018
Life is full of contrasts and this month's roundup of food and drink news is a tasty reminder of that. Whether you have a major sweet tooth or live for savoury bites, there's plenty to satisfy both ends of the flavour spectrum in the 852. Naturally, we're diving straight into the desserts first! Bon appétit!

Sweet Treats

Flavours of Hokkaidō at JW Marriott

Hong Kongers love an afternoon tea, and The Lounge at JW Marriott is whipping up a beautiful lightweight set just in time for the sweltering summer. Created in collaboration with master Japanese guest pastry chef Asada Shinpei, the set features three tiers of treats which celebrate the summertime specialties of Hokkaidō. Savouries include the Iberico Ham Crostini with Figs, King Crab Donut, and Abalone Tart, while the Hokkaidō Pumpkin Cheesecake, and Uji Kyoto Matcha Tiramisu feature on the sweet side. Perhaps the most impressive creation is the dainty white chocolate feather which gently rests atop the Hokkaidō Melon Shortcake (pictured above). The set is accompanied by a selection of blueberry and raisin scones served with homemade jams and clotted cream, which pair beautifully with a freshly brewed gourmet coffee of pot of fine tea – or a glass of Möet Champagne for an additional price. While this all seems like a hefty amount of food for an afternoon tea set, it's certainly not too heavy on the stomach, thanks to the lightness of ingredients used. Hurry up though, as it's only available for the month of July.   The Lounge at JW Marriott, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, (+852) 2810 8366 Available from July 1 to 31 from 3.30pm to 6pm daily at The Lounge  Monday to Friday - $258 per person / $448 for two with welcome tea and coffee  Weekends and public holidays - $288 per person / $488 for two with welcome tea and coffee

Party in Paradise with PANDORA at Palm Court

Ooh, we love a bit of bling, and The Langham is certainly adding an extra touch of sparkle with its brand new afternoon tea set, created in partnership with Danish jewellery brand PANDORA. Served in the Palm Court lobby lounge, the indulgent set features a variety of sweet and savoury treats which pay tribute to PANDORA's playful designs and are inspired by a specific charm from the new Summer 2018 collection. Sweet items are served in an elegant white and pink leather box that resembles the brand's distinctive jewellery boxes, while savoury items and scones arrive at the table in a traditional three-tier stand. Sweet tooth guests will love the Heart Love pistachio and white chocolate mousse, cherry insert, and Iranian pistachio sable, or the Delicious Popcorn with Ecuador milk chocolate cremeux, cocoa biscuit, gianduja Chantilly, and caramelised popcorn. Savoury bites include the Sustainable Salmon and Scallops Dome with caviar and homemade beetroot bread, and the Rainbow Coleslaw and Apple Salad with Pastrami that mirrors the latest Burger & Fries charm. There is a Classic and Deluxe version of the set, and those who opt for the latter can enjoy the Colour Wheel, a whimsical creation made from French macaron and yuzu ganache, along with a glass of Perrier-Jouët Champagne. Fabulous darling! Palm Court, The Langham, 8 Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, (+852) 2132 7898 Available until August 31 Classic tea set costs $348 for one person and $598 for two persons Deluxe set costs $528 for one person and $888 for two persons Weekdays from 3pm to 5.30pm / weekends and public holidays from 2.15pm to 4.15pm or 4.30pm to 6.30pm

Rosemantic Summer at HABITŪ

Things are getting romantic at charming Italian style cafe, HABITŪ, with the launch of four rose-themed drinks and five desserts. New drinks to try are the Rosemantic Tea Jelly Soda ($55), Rose and Apple Yoghurt Smoothie ($60), hot Caffè Rosa ($49) and velvety Iced Rose Cappuccino ($54) with a shot of espresso. New delicacies include the Rose Crunchy Choco Pop ($25) and Mini HABITŪ Rose ($44), along with Parisian Rose Crespelle Cake ($46), and Rosemantic Parfait ($88). Love birds (or anyone with major sugar cravings) can tuck into these highly "grammable" treats, or opt for the Rosemantic Tea Set for two (pictured above) which includes two drinks and a selection of sweet treats. While we feel it would have made more sense to launch this tea set before Valentine's Day (for obvious reasons) it does make for a lovely afternoon pick-me-up if you happen to be out with your sweetheart or bestie, and given the high sugar content, you'll definitely want to share it with them!

HABITŪ, locations vary  Available until August 31 at all outlets The set costs $248 for 2 people

Savoury Bites

Sunday Roast Lunch at Mr Wolf

Nothing beats a traditional Sunday roast, and popular bar and restaurant Mr Wolf is serving up an all-you-can-eat buffet of all our favourites for an absolute steal at $288 per person. Sat in the huge dining area of this modern and casual venue, diners can feast on as much roast beef, crackling pork loin, and herb chicken as they can stomach, accompanied by dropping roasties, truffled cauliflower cheese, carrots, peas, smoked bacon, cabbage, and fluffy Yorkshire puddings. Mouth watering yet? It should be, because this feast is epic. The beef and Yorkshire puds are particularly excellent and cooked to perfection, but eat slowly as the Mr Wolf team are very generous servers, and you'll want to leave enough room to enjoy a cheeky dessert from the à la carte menu. The Paris-Brest Choux Pastry with cream, peanuts, and salt caramel ice cream ($120) is devilishly good! Get your timing right and you could be wrapping up your roast just in time for happy hour – $40 cocktails on the terrace anyone? Mr Wolf, 5F, Crawford House, 70 Queens Road Central, (+852) 2526 0838 Happy Hour - every day from 3pm to 8pm

New Restaurant Madame Ching

Calling all carnivores! If you love nothing more than a meaty feast in a laid-back setting, then you will love Pirata Group's latest venture, Madame Ching, on Wan Chai's hip Star Street. Decked out like a traditional Chinese roasting house, this causal eatery serves up Cantonese style barbecue items that are excellent for sharing. The menu isn't too overwhelming, offering tasty dishes like Sesame Prawn Toast ($110) and crispy General Son's Chicken ($95) alongside veggie options like Roast Cauliflower ($85), and small seasonal plates like Typhoon Shelter Tofu ($90) and Cantonese Cuban pulled pork ($90). The real star, though, is the BBQ Roast section, which features Pork Belly ($130), Char Siu ($170), and Roast Duck ($130) that are all beyond delicious. But if you can't decide what to order, you can opt for Ching's Banquet Menu ($320 per person) which gets you a selection of popular sharing dishes. Just make sure you try the cocktails, as they are just as impressive in both presentation and flavour, with the tangy Beijing Lake and sweet Sleepy Dragon (both $90) standing out. Madame takes no reservations, however, so make sure you arrive before the dinner crowd. Madame Ching, G/F, 5 Star Street, Wan Chai, (+852) 2577 7227

New Bites at Rummin' Tings

Our favourite Caribbean haunt is luring us in with even more delicious bites that pair perfectly with the selection of kickass cocktails on offer. In addition to the Rummin' Tings favourites that we've come to know and love, like the Jamrock Jerk Chicken, Sticky Island Ribs, and Cubano Sandwich, the bar is now serving things like Rummin’ Wings ($80) and devilishly delicious Papas Rellenas ($70) - fried stuffed potatoes with beef. Health conscious diners can tuck into the light and refreshing Grilled Corn Avocado Salad ($120) with cherry tomatoes, avocado, grilled Corn, and coconut flakes. It's near impossible to choose our favourite dishes because they all taste insanely good and have a level of authenticity that makes them even more enjoyable to eat – straight from a Caribbean kitchen! However, we do recommend leaving enough room to knock back a cocktail or two – the Doux Doux ($100) with cucumber infused gin, elderflower liquor, and Gosling Black Seal Rum is an absolute delight! Swing by on a Tuesday to enjoy $50 Mojitos, or Ladies Night on a Wednesday for two-for-one drinks, live DJ beats, and the insanely delicious Big Booty cocktail ($50). Need we say more?
Rummin' Tings, 28 Hollywood Road, Central, (+852) 2523 7070

New Food Menu at Runway

The aviation themed bar is perhaps better known for its cocktails than for its food, but a new menu offering hopes to change that. One of the only bars on Wyndham Street to offer a late night food menu, Runway is now enticing city dwellers with a selection of snacks and larger dishes inspired by various destinations around the world, for a reasonable price. From 3pm until midnight, guests can tuck into things like South African Piri Piri Wings ($98), Japanese Tempura ($98), and Mexican 'High Altitude' Nachos ($108) which pair perfectly with a cold pint or cocktail. The bar is also serving up burgers, pastas, pizzas, and salads, as well as several desserts such as Tiramisu, New Your Cheesecake, and Molten Lava Cake (all $98), making this a convenient and affordable option if you happen to be in the area. Runway, Shop B, G/F, Garfield Commercial Building, 75-77 Wyndham Street, Central, (+852) 2827 9022
