New Web Series 'Pineapple' Explores Cultural Identity in Hong Kong

By Amanda Sheppard 12 September 2018
With Crazy Rich Asians successfully slinging Singapore into the limelight, and exploring the complex theme of cultural identity, we think it's high time Hong Kong had its moment. Well, that time has finally come, thanks to a brand new web series which tells a typical coming-of-age story that centres on the very same topic.

The series is called Pineapple (菠蘿) and thankfully, has nothing to do with the irritating Pen Pineapple Apple Pen music video that went viral back in 2016 – phew! Co-created by Jane Chow and Peter Rafe – two film students currently studying in Los Angeles – the series is set entirely in our beloved 852, while the production is the work of an internationally diverse cast and crew, with members from Hong Kong, the United States, India, and the Philippines. Pineapple (菠蘿) deals with the challenges of navigating adolescence in the cultural melting pot that is Asia's World City. Piqued your interest? You're not alone. The trailer has already garnered nearly 25,000 views on Facebook, and we can't wait for it to hit our screens! Visit the Pineapple (菠蘿) Facebook page for up-to-date information on release dates and more teaser clips.

She can often be found getting lost somewhere very familiar, planning her next holiday, and enjoying a cup (or three) of good, strong coffee.
