24 must-have fashion items for autumn in Hong Kong

By Ching Yuen 11 November 2019
It’s time for us to break out the burgundy! As our favourite season rolls ‘round, we now have a limited time window (and an excuse) to buy and wear autumnal fashion pieces; we’re talking heeled boots, trench coats, and whatever more you dare to wear. To celebrate the season, we put together a list of must-have fashion items and accessories that will take your outfit game to a whole new level. With Hong Kong’s temperate climate, it will probably take a few more months before it gets properly cold, so if you’re lucky, you can snatch up these items during the Black Friday sales in about two weeks’ time!

Coats

‘Tis the season for outerwear to take over the fashion scene, and you can hardly go wrong with coats. Classic military duster coats, like Masscob’s John Herringbone Wool Coat ($5,290), are our favourites, but you can also put a spin on them for a more modern feel. Belted trench coats, like the Cape-Belted Trench Coat ($10,455) from Lemaire, give you a more dynamic silhouette, whilst cropped jackets in stripes or checkers will appeal to the more adventurous dressers, like the Bianka Check-Cropped Jacket ($3,990) from Baum und Pferdgarten. For a more refined look, Sonia Rykiel’s Double-Breasted Checked Wool-Felt Jacket ($5,022) ticks all of our boxes.

Bottoms

The good thing about Hong Kong’s mild autumns is that you can add on the layers, but you don’t have to cover yourself up entirely to avoid freezing to death. With that kind of flexibility, your outfits can be more versatile, with plenty of options in matching your tops and bottoms. We would recommend bringing in some plaids and checkers with mid-length skirts that would match with heeled boots of the right colour, like the frill-hemmed Silva Check Midi-Skirt ($2,400) from Baum und Pferdgarten and the asymmetrical Fold-over Prince of Wales Checked Wool Midi-Skirt ($2,122) by Pushbutton, which is sure to be a conversation starter. Layers are also the highlight of the season, so get yourself mix-fabric skirts to level up your style game, like Rejina Pyo’s High-Rise Check Midi Pencil Skirt ($3,787). Long waist-high trousers would also be perfect to show off your legs! The flared Striped Wool Trousers ($6,370) from ASAI should do the trick.

Shoes

Time to rearrange our shoe cupboard, because boot season is here and they’re going to take up a lot more space than you anticipated. Heeled boots lend any outfit an added boost of style and elegance, and they also come with an extra dose of self-confidence for free, since you will probably be a few inches taller than everyone in the room. Plain-coloured boots, like the Metallic Ankle Boots ($4,803) from Sergio Rossi, are easiest to match outfits with. However, you could always jazz up your footwear by picking patent leather; the midnight blue Patent Leather Boots ($3,208) from Dorateymur would be a good choice to add some colour to your wardrobe. Additionally, you can opt for a playful element in your heels with intricate shoes like the Broken Heel Knit Boots ($9,221) from Unravel Project. If the heels are tiring you out, flats can still work their way into autumn if you get the right match, like the velvet, marigold-coloured Zaydie ($US$229) flats from Club Monaco.

Hats

One of the must-have accessories for autumn is a good old hat. Now that the weather’s cooling down, you can have an excuse to match headwear with your outfits. Whether you’re taking to the seas with Zara’s Nautical Cap ($229) or channelling feminine adventure vibes with Ruslan Baginsky’s Logo Fedora Hat ($2,539), there are many options out there to go with your style of the day. You can add elegant Parisian flair with Zara’s Metallic Thread Beret ($199) as well. If you’re going for a more casual-yet-refined look, A Little Shy does a sleek Velvet Cap ($50) that elevates any outfit. The most important thing to remember is that fabric and colour are the easiest factors to help bring out the autumnal touches in your outfit!

Bags

Bags are a necessity for any outfit, and since most of us will be busting out our long and drapey coats for the cool autumn breeze, it is the perfect season to experiment with some more accentuated bags. Give your outfit an edgy look with Zoobeetle’s autumn-coloured New York Bi-Material Belt Bag (€320) or go for a lemonade-coloured Serra Bucket Bag ($2,680) by Esemblẽ to stash all of your daily essentials. Feel free to be more experimental with shapes and bold colours as long as it doesn’t clash with your outerwear! Blossom’s Rectangle 3-Way Bag ($1,150) is the perfect way to add texture to your outfit, and the C Ring Panelled Shoulder Bag ($10,557) from Chloé adds a pop of colour to any autumnal palette.

Accessories

Autumnal jewellery is always fun to play around with, and we are ready to take on the fashion challenge! From go-big-or-go-home earrings like Plain-J’s Currant Tassel Earrings ($172) to statement rings like Aurelie Bidermann’s Wrap-Around Snake Ring ($1,089), we would recommend spotlighting one piece of accessory and make it the main attraction. Don’t forget about hair accessories, such as the thick headbands that took over the fashion scene this season or the massive hair clip trend that is here to stay! We’d recommend the Thada Lamé Headband ($1,426) by Jennifer Behr and Versace’s Crystal-Embellished Medusa Hairclip ($2,600) for an eye-catching addition to your outfit.
