In the midst of Hong Kong's growing zero-waste trend, Kennedy Town recently welcomed a new sustainable lifestyle grocery store, Slowood, to the neighbourhood. Lifestyle bloggers Seth and Julia from For Something More give us the lowdown on what the store has to offer.
Slowood is founder Vicky Chen's vision for a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for Hong Kong. Chen opened her first shop, Pimary, at Tai Mei Tuk in 2013, and has been gaining momentum and popularity in the city's eco-friendly shopping scene ever since. All products at her shops are carefully selected and sourced by Chen herself.
At Slowood, the clean wooden shelves are comfortably full of eco-friendly products, ranging from practical household goods such as laundry detergent, to some truly unique gourmet foods like imported sardines from Portugal. Apart from household products, Slowood also offers sustainable and eco-friendly homewares, perfumes, moisturisers, cleansers, soaps, and more.
Beyond providing eco-friendly items, the store stocks many package-free products with a buy-what-you-like policy that allows you to purchase just the right amount of whatever you need. You can simply measure any quantity of spices, grains, legumes, liquid soaps, or oils you like, weigh it out to calculate the cost, and then pay at the counter. If you forget to bring your own reusable containers, the shop also has a variety available for purchase in store.
With the store's organic and vegan cafe set to open in about a month’s time, it’s not hard to imagine Slowood becoming a go-to option in Kennedy Town for casual meet-ups, a healthy meal, or an intimate space for small gatherings of any variety.
Slowood, The Hudson, 11 Davis Street, Sai Wan (Kennedy Town Station, Exit C), (+852) 2818 0203
