Can you feel it in the air? It is finally that time of the year when the temperature in Hong Kong starts to dip, the air stops feeling like hot soup, and we can finally enjoy spending time outside. Not only is this season a favourite amongst Hongkongers, but it is also the perfect time to chill and take in a movie at an outdoor cinema.
Luckily, the beloved open-air cinema located at Central Harbourfront, The Grounds at AIA Vitality Park, is reopening! Read on to find out more about this year’s movie selection, dining options, and more before opening night on 12 October.
The Grounds returns to take over the space at AIA Vitality Park for a unique under-the-stars movie experience. Hidden between Victoria Harbour, the skyscrapers, and the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, the massive screen faces a beautiful lawn filled with picket-fenced private pods, colourful deck chairs, bean bags, and sofas. Time spent at The Grounds is a guaranteed good time, whether you’re watching classics or newly released hits.
Kicking off this season of The Grounds is the 1990s classic movie Clueless. Other hit productions on the programme include The Bodyguard, Mamma Mia, Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Notebook, Avatar: The Way of Water, Interstellar, and even comedy blockbuster Zoolander. Animated movies such as The Lego Movie and Up and are also on show.
If you are one of the few people who has not yet seen Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once or Greta Gerwig’s summer spectacular Barbie, you will be able to see them all at The Grounds, making the experience even more memorable!
This post-pandemic edition of The Grounds has a pre-theatre area so you can enjoy drinks with your friends and other movie-goers. Try to make it to AIA Vitality Park earlier to try out the Stella Artois bar, Monkey47 cocktail experience, and Mumm Champagne bar trolleys! You can toast under the stars before settling down in your pod to enjoy the film screening.
Feeling hungry? The Grounds is bringing back its ingenious mobile ordering system so you don’t have to miss even one bit of the movie. From your phone, you can order off the menu of Jardine House’s BaseHall food court and have it delivered straight to your pod. There is, of course, popcorn, but also burgers, Thai food, ramen, and even ice cream from Messina!
