meet.mozaic is here to tell us all about dating trends around the world, and more importantly, Hong Kong.
Dating Trends Around the World
What is your definition of being single? As social constructs evolve, the meaning of being single is no longer what it was before. With over 40 percent
1 of children being born to unmarried women in America, and the number of unmarried couples with children tripling, family structures are rapidly changing around the globe.
The number of adults in America who have never married is also the highest it has ever been, with a staggering 20 percent
2 of the total population falling under this category, while 15 percent
3of Europe's population live in consensual unions. This growing trend has been called "the greatest social change of the last 50 years"
by Eric Klinenbert
4, a sociologist from New York University.
If you gather up all these interesting statistics from around the world, it's fair to say that the concept of marriage (as a social norm) is on a slow decline.
Why Say No?
There are a couple of reasons for this clear decline in marriage, with the most common one being about careers. More and more people are living on their own, which means they have an oasis of productive solitude and the freedom to be more focused on their career development, while enjoying a comfortable income and becoming fully independent. This whole process takes a lot more time and effort than imagined, so for a lot of people, by the time they have achieved their career goals, it's possible for them to feel that it's too late, or that they have become too set in their ways, to accommodate someone else in their life.
Another reason could simply be not wanting to settle down. With the advent of the internet, a surprisingly large number of people experience less and less human interaction and often don't want to leave home apart from going to work, relying more on online contact only. Plus, with the need for personal freedom put above everything else, many might feel that they would rather be single, even if that leads to loneliness.
Dating in Hong Kong
If we consider all of the above, and add on one more factor – gender imbalance
5 – this would explain perfectly the dating situation here in Hong Kong. In 2016, there were only 852 men for every 1,000 women in Hong Kong
6, which would help explain the continuous increase in the average marriage age for both men and women in the city, as well as the proportion of those who have never married.
With the gender gap increasing continuously, and no news of the situation changing anytime soon, it is estimated that
one in every five women will remain single in Hong Kong. But on the bright side, there are many strong, independent women who don't feel the need to rely on anyone to provide for them.
