Vegan food used to be rare and not found in many places, especially within Kuala Lumpur. However, thanks to the growing vegan community in recent years, more plant-based restaurants are sprouting. With that, we compiled a list of the best plant-based restaurants in Kuala Lumpur for our dear vegan friends! Even if you have been a carnivore all your life, these restaurants will surely change the way you perceive vegan food.

Sala

Sala is a fully vegan restaurant that serves Mexican flavours with a local twist. Expect all your favourites like burritos, tacos, Mexican rice bowls, and even desserts in healthier and meatless editions.

For this restaurant, we suggest that you try their burritos (RM24) that come with four choices of fillings. First, there is the mushroom asada wrapped with brown rice, black beans, pico de gallo, coleslaw, vegan cheese, and roasted chipotle. You can also tingle your taste buds with the spicy Asian tofu wrapped with brown rice, black beans, and spicy tofu. Otherwise, you can try the BBQ pulled jackfruit for a vegan take on Tex-Mex. There is also the delectable El Dominic which comes with dhall, mushroom, tempeh, chickpeas, coleslaw, and baby spinach.

If you’re craving a sweet ending without the guilt of overeating, their bite-sized bliss balls (RM 6) will be perfect. By the way, did we mention that Sala is also pet-friendly?

Supe Japanese Vegan KL

Located in Bukit Bintang, this classy restaurant serves up some of the best vegan Japanese dishes in Kuala Lumpur. With health as a top priority, the chef uses only quality ingredients such as extra virgin olive oil and Himalayan salt for seasoning, and its wasabi vegan mayonnaise is made from scratch. The menu is very extensive, so if you’re unsure of what to try, go with their ramen and sushi—they are among the top choices for frequent patrons.

The Supe ramen (RM17) is a crowd-pleaser due to its broth of fresh lemongrass, turmeric, curry leaves, dried chillies, and a secret homemade chilli paste. Topped with seaweed, tofu cubes, and broccoli, this ramen will surely satisfy the taste buds of even the pickiest carnivores around. The broth’s spiciness can be adjusted to your own liking from levels of zero (non-spicy) to five (spiciest choice available).

For sushi, the all-in-one sushi platter (price varies with different amounts of sushi) allows you to pick any flavour available in the menu. We highly recommend the rainbow maki, crispy G-Ken floss, and our personal all-time favourite, the chuka wakame gunkan. Take note that parking is a bit tough, so plan your transportation beforehand.

Loving Café

Loving Café serves a wide variety of vegan dishes, both Asian and Western. For Asian flavours, try the signature pineapple fried rice (RM17.80) and Vietnamese rolls (RM16.80) wrapped with a medley of colourful vegetables. If you’re a fan of coffee, you can now enjoy creamy dairy-free coffee as well.

February 18 (二月食吧)

This humble eatery serves homemade vegan dishes in fusion style. Imagine dining over at your grandparents’ place, enjoying warm comfort food made just for you—that is exactly how it feels like.

We recommend trying the Popeye’s pasta (RM18) which consists of stir-fried fusilli pasta with tempeh, mixed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, spinach, and toasted sesame seeds. Though meatless, the tempeh adds savouriness and the tartness of the cherry tomatoes blend very well with the light sesame flavour. Another speciality is the matcha scones (RM24) served with red bean paste instead of butter and jam. For the scones, take note that it requires at least two days to pre-order. Last but not least, their soy pudding (RM8) served with strawberry sauce and osmanthus flower is a must-try as well.

Kind Kones

Kind Kones is an all-natural dessert company that serves vegan cakes, snacks, and ice cream. For cakes, we highly recommend the matcha chestnut cake (RM17.90 per slice) made of layers of matcha-infused sponge cake, chestnut purée, and cashew coconut cream. For snacks, the cranberry, fig, and chia seed superfood bliss ball (RM6 per piece) will give you energy without the sugar crash! When it comes to ice cream, try the famous Blue Planet (RM13.80 per single scoop) with coconut and vanilla, and naturally coloured blue with butterfly pea flowers.

The Hungry Tapir

The Hungry Tapir is not only popular for its Instagrammable décor but also its extensive vegan menu. If you can only try one item, it should be the Pink Bombshell (RM30). This pretty-in-pink burger is packed with the deliciousness of herb cheese, barbecue sauce, caramelised onions, lettuce, tomato, and also with a dash of truffle vinaigrette. It’s also one of the first KL vegan eateries that comes with a full-fledged bar! Vegans can now enjoy their favourite blend of cocktails or speciality drinks without worrying about the ingredients.
