It feels like it’s been the longest year ever as our much-anticipated travel plans continue to be put on hold due to
the uncertainties of Covid. We might have served the environment well by minimising air travel,
but the soon-to-be (fingers crossed) booming hospitality landscape is likely to bring us back
to a deteriorating state, once restrictions are lifted.
Here, we have hand-picked some of the pioneers in Hong Kong’s hotel industry who are driving transformation under the
pandemic—plus, their eco-conscious staycation offers, so you can enjoy your next urban retreat and feel good about it.
As if their exceptionally elegant interiors and their exquisite dining establishments are not already the pinnacle of good living,
Rosewood Hong Kong unveiled their first-ever “Staycation for Good” this summer. Partnering up
with local NGOs, the quarterly programme brings attention to complex
environmental and societal issues, with their recent one exploring waste and the ethical
production of food. Families are welcomed to experience interactive workshops
during their two-night stay, helmed by industry leaders. Stay tuned for the return of
this eco-conscious staycation during Christmas or Chinese New Year for a different kind of luxurious
staycation!

It has been almost a year since Ovolo Hotels announced its bold ambition to go vegetarian in all of its restaurants, bars, and in-room dining services across its properties. It seems that this pledge is here to stay and even expand further to other operations within the group! Despite Ovolo Southside and Central being designated quarantine hotels of the fifth cycle, the Sheung Wan outlet remains open to the public. Ovolo Hotels adheres to its commitment by using environmentally-friendly amenities and further investing in a truly sustainable supply chain.
Being part of Swire Hotels—a notable leader in sustainability—East Hong Kong has
a lot to showcase recently in the eco-conscious department, from installing in-room distillation taps in their
newly refurbished rooms to the exhilarating launch of their very own Bao Beer, made of surplus bread from their in-house café Domain. East Hong Kong has
been striving to serve the environment better one step at a time, and has committed to serving plant-based options in their dining outlets and providing reusable or recyclable hotel products. Plus, a stay at East Hong Kong comes with the bonus of an unparalleled view of Victoria Harbour over downtown Island East!

Whisk yourself and your loved ones away to the tranquil setting of Lantau Island, where the “Family Farmcation” at
Sheraton Tung Chung awaits. Learn about food production on
a local farm and experience farming using organic fertilisers in nearby Mui Wo. A
low-carbon set dinner at Yue—serving contemporary Chinese fare—is part of the
staycation programme, with an option to request an entirely vegetarian menu. Get active with their
renowned hiking track, or simply enjoy the lush surroundings and spare a moment
of appreciation for nature.

Although Eaton HK is known for its Michelin-starred restaurant Yat Tung Heen, the Jordan hotel certainly has a lot more to
offer, especially since it has embedded sustainability in its operations. Eaton HK
introduced the “Stay Clean, Go Green” package just in time for an urban recharge,
advocating for a healthy lifestyle. Apart from a stay in one of their design-driven rooms and $500 in dining credits, guests are welcomed with vegan snacks, reusable
water bottles, a “green guide” for education on sustainable habits and
offerings, as well as a donation to Zero Foodprint Asia—an NGO dedicated to
adopting regenerative agriculture. Full access
to the rooftop yoga studio and the pool for ultimate relaxation is included, so you can take time for yourself while leaving a minimal ecological footprint.

Hotel Icon has long been a proponent of eco-friendly living in Hong Kong. As one of the only hotels in the city to introduce an in-room filtration and drinking water system in guest rooms, as well as encourage sustainable amenities such as in-shower dispensers and organic bathroom products packaged in biodegradable materials, Hotel Icon goes the extra mile to ensure that your staycation will leave the smallest footprint possible. It also revamped its check-in process to be paperless, offers vegetarian menus, and operates a fleet of electric transportation options!
