Another day, another series of nauseating news. We get it, it’s difficult to keep up with all the information out there. Sometimes you watch the news and it feels like the world is spiralling out of control (kind of like a bad hangover) and you end up walking away from the TV with a banging headache. In the spirit of public enlightenment, we bring you our weekly fun news column, where we bring you the most interesting international, national, or local headline from the past week — that you have likely overlooked.

Over the past year or so, Hong Kong has been stepping up its game when it comes to recycling and reducing waste. Jumping on the bandwagon is Watsons Water, which recently launched an initiative to help save the environment.
The giant water company announced on Wednesday that a total of 400 "Green Point" water bottle recycling machines will be installed across Hong Kong by the end of March. Not only can these machines collect up to 1,000 water bottles of
all brands (ranging from 230ml to 1.8 litres in size), but in an effort to encourage more donations, cash coupons and gift redemptions will also be offered to users. Here's how you can redeem these goodies:
- Download the 'Drops of Fun' mobile application
- Sign up
- Scan the membership code at the machine
- Scan the bar code on the water bottle, and dispose the bottle inside the machine
- 5 points will be rewarded to your profile for each bottle, and you can redeem the points for various coupons or gifts through the application
For as little as 25 points, users can receive a $50 cash coupon to use at places such as ParknShop. As for what kind of gifts you'll be able to redeem, we'll have to wait for further announcements from Watsons. While you don't have to download the application to donate a water bottle, you will need it to collect points, so it's probably a good idea.
The managing director of Watsons Water, Michelle Chan Wen-mee, claims this is not a business project, but a simple way for the company to give the public greater incentive to recycle, and she hopes to expand the initiative to other beverage companies too. In the meantime though, the brand plans to introduce 100 water-refill machines for a six-month trial period, which will sell 100ml of water for just $1, in efforts to encourage more people to bring their own bottle.
With so many incentives lying in store, perhaps we'll all make a bigger effort to recycle plastic bottles instead of throwing them away, or start using our own water bottles more often. Happy recycling, Hong Kong!
