Wearable Tech to Help You Get in Shape

By Amanda Sheppard 31 December 2018
With the new year comes a slew of new resolutions – promises to get out, stay active, and most importantly – not to let fitness goals end up like last years. Try as you might and despite the best of intentions, this is often easier said than done. But if you’re willing to make a real go of it this year, there are gadgets galore to help you on your way. These are our top picks of wearable tech to help you get (and stay) in shape.

Apple Watch Series 4

Near-synonymous with wearable tech, the Apple Watch blends form and function together in a stylish accessory packed with technology. With a larger display, new heart rate monitor and a variety of built-in workouts available on screen, the watches are designed to aid your day to day life, no matter your routine. All Series 4 watches are equipped with GPS, while some are also equipped with a cellular service, allowing you to make and receive calls with your watch, even when you’ve left your phone at home. Prices start from $3,199. Available at Apple Hong Kong stores and select retailers

Fitbit Versa

At first glance, you’d be forgiven for confusing the Versa with the Apple Watch. Of similar size and shape, the fitness tracker also boasts many of the same functions. And while it may not be quite as capable as its more popular doppelganger, it also won’t set you back nearly as much. The Fitbit Versa monitors your heart rate, sleeping patterns, steps, flights of stairs climbed and can track a multitude of exercise types. The water-resistant and sweatproof device can also deliver notifications for messaging services including WhatsApp and SMS, and incoming phone calls. Priced at $1,798 (retail value). Available at select retailers, including FORTRESS

HOVR Phantom CT Night Running Shoes

Your fitness tracker might be able to tell you how far you’ve run and log your distances over an extended period of time, but the HOVR Phantom CT Night Running Shoes by Under Armour will help to analyse your form while running. The lightweight, cushioned shoes offer a ‘zero-gravity’ feel for runners, while the UA HOVR foam helps put a spring in your step. The shoes are suitable for neutral runners who tend to pound the pavement, as opposed to the trails. Priced at $1,299. Available at Under Armour stores

Motiv Ring

If you’re interested in the idea of wearable tech but not a fan of the sporting look during the work week, the Motiv Ring offers a stylish alternative to a wristwatch tracker. The subtle device is waterproof and can be worn 24 hours a day, with a battery life of up to three days. Motiv rings track and monitor sleep, fitness and heart rate, helping you keep track of your overall health and fitness. It’s available for purchase in black, silver and rose gold finishes, and in seven different sizes. Priced at $1,563 (199 USD). Available on Amazon

Spire Mindfulness and Activity Tracker

For those who would rather their wearable tech wasn’t a focal point of their wardrobe, the Spire Mindfulness and Activity Tracker offers a concealed alternative. It clips conveniently onto clothing and syncs with your smartphone through its compatible app. While it tracks standard fitness statistics including the number of steps and calories, it also provides users with mindfulness, productivity and health and fitness notes throughout the day. Notifications are delivered to your smartphone throughout the day, reminding you to set time aside for breathing exercises, mindful moments and more. Priced at $998. Available from Apple Hong Kong

Vívomove HR Hybrid Smartwatch

Designed in the conventional, analogue fashion, this hybrid smartwatch boasts some serious tech behind the dial. Aside from its activity tracking functionalities, the smartwatch also has a gauge on the right side of the watch face that fills if wearers stay inactive for too long, while steps taken, hours slept, and other stats are wirelessly synced to your smartphone through the free Garmin Connect Mobile app. It comes in four unique designs, and the option of either a nylon or premium leather wristband. Priced at $2,799. Available at select retailers, including FORTRESS
