Over the past year and a half of pandemic living, Hongkongers have been out in droves, rediscovering their city on foot one hike at a time, as well as on public transit through the opening of new MTR lines and stations. But scaling towering peaks and jostling for space on trains is not everyone’s idea of a fun time, so if you are looking for a less strenuous (but equally picturesque) way to spend the weekend, behold the newly opened Tsuen Wan waterfront cycling track!

Spanning 2.3 kilometres across the Tsuen Wan waterfront from Tsuen Wan Riviera Park to Bayview Garden, the brand-new cycling track forms a small part of the 82-kilometre New Territories Cycle Track Network, which runs from Tuen Mun to Ma On Shan (completed in 2020) and Tsuen Wan to Tuen Mun (still in development).

Replete with views of Tsing Yi and the Rambler Channel, the track offers convenient entry and exit hubs, and passes landmarks like the Tsuen Wan Park and Tsuen Wan Sports Centre. Along the track are resting stations and bike parking areas, as well as bathrooms, water fountains, and special zones for little ones to practise their cycling.

Located within walking distance of the Tsuen Wan West MTR station, the waterfront cycling track is perfectly positioned for a bit of afternoon fun. Once you have had your fill of pedalling back and forth alongside the lapping waves, turn your attention to the things you can explore in and around Tsuen Wan, from quiet beaches in Ting Kau to hip coffee shops and The Mills, a heritage-filled cotton-mill-turned-arts-hub. It is also a foodie’s paradise!

Tuen Mun to So Kwun Wat and Tsuen Wan Bayview Garden to So Kwun Wat are the final two sections of the expansive New Territories Cycle Track Network. Both are currently still under development, and will cover rural neighbourhoods such as Sham Tseng and Siu Lam Tsuen, as well as the Hong Kong Gold Coast upon completion.
