Mental health matters are chronically left under the radar in Hong Kong. Whether you’re dealing with a long-term condition, struggling to cope with a recent loss or trauma, or you’re simply struggling, the importance of being able to talk openly and honestly can’t be overstated. Recent reports show that as many as one in six Hongkongers suffer from mental illness. Stigmas aside, if you feel like you’re suffering, the options for help abound. Here are just some of the counsellors and help available to you, across the city.

Integrated Medical Institute

The Integrated Medical Institute is a holistic wellness centre, with a focus on the ways that mental and physical health are integrally connected. St John’s Cathedral Counselling Service

St John’s Cathedral Counselling is a non-denominational counselling service is located in the heart of Central. For those without health insurance or who are worried about the costs of counselling, St John’s offers a sliding scale, depending on your income and profession. Sessions are available for children, adults and teens and for both individuals and couples, to help with a variety of issues, ranging from relationship troubles to anxiety, stress, phobias, eating disorders and substance abuse. Central Health

The team at Central Health know that mental health help doesn’t always appear to be accessible, especially in Hong Kong. They deploy a range of techniques, which include psychodynamic therapies, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioural therapies to help people find that all-important balance in life. With a psychiatrist, clinical psychologists, behavioural therapists and numerous counsellors at the practice, the multitude of techniques and approaches create a safe space for all. Dimensions Centre

At the Dimensions Centre, psychiatric and clinical psychotherapy services are available to children, teens and adults. Sessions are available to individuals, couples and families. Mind Matters

Clinical psychologist and hypnotherapist Dr Melanie Bryan holds more than two decades of experience under her belt. Her Mind Matters practice helps patients address a multitude of concerns, including a fear of flying, the desire to quit smoking, develop a positive relationship with food, anger management treatments, insomnia and more.
